Whether you’re an avid long-distance runner or running errands is more your speed, the Boston Marathon is something to celebrate. Marathon Monday is an incredible exhibition of athleticism but also a symbol of resilience, pride and strength for the City of Boston. If you will be among the 30,000 runners or countless spectators, make sure that you’re prepared to withstand the elements as you participate in our city’s rich tradition this April 17.
Preparing for a marathon requires much more than clocking miles. The mental preparation is serious, as well as diet, passion, and dressing for unpredictable New England weather. Here’s how you can ensure you’re ready to go on marathon day.
The Under Armour Boston Brand House is a must-stop on your pre-marathon to-do list. The store will be featuring special events throughout the weekend, including a DJ, photobooths, and custom apparel. Stop by the store to learn more about all of the celebratory happenings this year.
When it comes to outfitting for the marathon, Under Armour has thought of everything. The Women’s UA Fly-By Elite 2-in-1 Shorts touts strategic mesh, a key pocket, and reflective hits — so, all you’ll be thinking about is going faster, longer. They are lightweight and durable, the stretch-woven fabric delivers superior comfort and mobility. The built-in, knit compression shorts give coverage and support with quick-dry breathability.
One never knows how the New England weather will shake out. Should the sun shine high, you can opt for this Women’s UA Iso-Chill Launch Run Visor to hold back your hair and block the rays. Conversely, you can repel the chill and stay centered with the Women’s UA Storm Launch Multi Hair Beanie.
No matter the forecast, Spring mornings tend to be chilly in Boston. The Men’s UA Run Anywhere Pullover is both a stylish and wise way to start the day. UA Microthread body fabric dries fast, won’t cling, and stretches without absorbing sweat. The front kangaroo pocket is perfect for keeping energy pouches, keys, and your I.D.
The Men’s UA Charged Pursuit 3 Twist Running Shoes are fast and furiously the coolest of the bunch. Light and flexible is the name of the game here. A lot of mesh for breathability and Charged Cushioning® to help protect against impact. Just put them on and run for miles — 26.2 to be exact!
lululemon has the athletic wear that will keep everything in place while you race. For example, this Fast and Free Running Belt is sleek, lightweight, breathable, and fits all your essentials so you can go the distance. It’s the perfect fit for anyone on the course.
Run Times Bra High Support helps to keep your mind on your stride. This sleek bra gives you support, separation and coverage, with perforated paneling for airflow.
The SenseKnit Running Short 10″ will help take long-distance runs further. Powered by SenseKnit™ technology, these shorts offer unrestricted running freedom and targeted support, so you feel energized with every stride.
The newest addition to the Prudential Center family, Alo Yoga offers “studio-to-street” athleticwear that’s as performance-ready and durable as it is stylish and comfortable.
The Stride Short offers a high waist and lightweight fabric, ideal for going the distance. Pair with the Airlift Winter Warm Hooded Runner, an all-weather layering piece made from sleek, performance Airlift fabric with a brushed interior for weightless warmth.
We also like the Adapt Running Short — the hidden interior pocket is ideal for storing your key and a card while you race. If it’s a cold or wet morning on April 17, the Midweight Performance Gloves will keep chills at bay (and you’ll appreciate the touchscreen-compatible fingertips!).
Carb-loading is an important component of preparing for the long-haul of a marathon, as it helps to reduce fatigue and improve performance. So, what better place to head than Eataly Boston?!
La Pizza & La Pasta serves all your pre- (and post-) marathon meals to build up and restore energy. Pizza and pasta are just the tip of the Italian iceberg — these two culinary staples are the most beloved exports from Italy, especially for runners.
Don’t get bogged down with too many toppings before the race. Enjoy a Margherita Verace pizza with San Marzano tomato sauce, mozzarella di bufala from Napoli, fresh basil, and extra virgin olive oil. Prefer the pasta version? Try the Lo Spaghetto Al Pomodoro which features Afeltra spaghetto, Così Com’è Datterino tomatoes, ROI extra virgin olive oil, sea salt, and basil.
While it feels the choices are unlimited at The Cheesecake Factory, we have a few favorites to share with you when it comes to marathon meal-prep.
For one: Shrimp Scampi, Paris bistro-style! Sauteed with whole cloves of garlic, white wine, fresh basil and tomato. Served with angel hair pasta, it’s a light and fresh dish, not bogged down by heavy cream. Packed with protein, carbohydrates, and so much flavor, it’ll give you some extra pep in your step for the big race.
Celebratory dessert to go! The Factory’s whole cheesecakes are served deeply chilled. They travel well and can be stored in your freezer to enjoy later. Defrost in your refrigerator before you head out for the race, so you can celebrate post-marathon — because you totally deserve it!
Rain or shine, you can cheer your friends on in style after a stop by Canada Goose. The Nanaimo Jacket is a forward and functional men’s raincoat that is perfect for transitional seasons. It’s waterproof, windproof, and stows away easily into the cinched hood. The seam-sealed construction and mesh-venting under the back panel keeps you dry and comfortable, no matter the ever-changing weather.
For women, the Salida Jacket is a lightweight, stowable coat with lots of colors to choose from. The articulated sleeves and underarm gussets provide an excellent fit, while still allowing for plenty of range-of-motion. And did we mention the pockets?!?
For our younger spectators, the Youth Logan Parka is as cool as it gets, with sizes to accommodate children from age 6 to 18. The fur ruffs are all removable, and the sleeve extensions allow the coat to grow with your child, so you can make Marathon Monday an annual family tradition. Built for superior outdoor durability and with a lifetime warranty, your children will be comfortable and cozy whether it’s their first or fourteenth marathon celebration.
Whether you’ve completed your 26.2 or a long morning of cheering, post-marathon meals are about indulgence. Earls Kitchen + Bar has over 14,000 square feet of great vibes to bring Marathon Monday to a close.
The ribeye and truffle butter combination is a treat: Black Angus, garlic mashed potatoes, seasonal vegetables make for a winning meal. For one last cheers, enjoy the classic margarita or one of Earls’ globally inspired signature drinks. The Signature Bloody Mary is certainly something to rave about.
It’s the final stretch — the Boston Marathon is just around the corner. Prudential Center is proud to celebrate the time-honored tradition this year, in particular, on the 10th anniversary of the Marathon bombings. We invite you to take a moment to remember in our memorial daffodil display when you are visiting. Our hearts are full of pride for the beautiful, resilient city of Boston. Best of luck to all of the runners. May we all remain #BostonStrong.
